COLOMBO (News 1st); Noting that challenges such as rising sea levels, climate change and global economic crises can only be addressed through unity and collective purpose, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stressed on the need for closer cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives as Indian Ocean neighbours.

The President made these remarks at a special state dinner he hosted in honour of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who is on an official state visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of President Dissanayake. The banquet was held last evening (04) at the Presidential Mansion in Colombo Fort.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, was warmly received at the Presidential Mansion by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake said the long-standing and steadily growing close relationship between Sri Lanka and the Maldives had been further strengthened by the visit of President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. He noted that the friendship between the two countries continues to deepen with time.

The President pointed out that the unique natural charm of both Sri Lanka and the Maldives, if jointly promoted, could bring significant benefits to the tourism sectors of both countries and deliver major gains to their peoples.

He also highlighted the strong people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and the Maldives, describing them as cultural bonds that date back centuries. President Dissanayake said there are common similarities between the languages of the two countries and noted that these enduring ties have ensured continuous close interaction, making Sri Lanka and the Maldives close friends both today and in the future.

Recalling historical ties, President Dissanayake said Sri Lanka regarded it as an honour to have hosted the signing of the declaration of independence of the Republic of Maldives in 1965. He described this milestone as a symbol of unity, cooperation and goodwill between the two nations, adding that this bond has led Maldivians to consider Sri Lanka as their second home.

The President further stated that Sri Lanka views the Maldives as a trusted and valued partner in its social and economic development, as well as in efforts to ensure regional peace and prosperity. He stressed that close cooperation between the two countries is essential when responding to global developments.

As neighbours in the Indian Ocean, President Dissanayake said the circumstances of Sri Lanka and the Maldives are deeply interconnected. He noted that issues such as rising sea levels, climate change and global economic challenges are shared concerns that affect both nations, and emphasised that they can only be confronted through unity and shared objectives.

He also expressed appreciation for the support extended by the Maldives whenever Sri Lanka faced difficult situations, gratefully acknowledging that assistance.

President Dissanayake said the discussions held earlier in the day between the leaders of the two countries would open new avenues to further strengthen cooperation between their peoples.

He invited President Muizzu to work together to deepen bilateral ties while safeguarding enduring values such as patience, compassion and sustainability, to ensure a brighter future for the people of both nations through unity and cooperation.

Extending his best wishes to President Muizzu and the accompanying delegation, President Dissanayake said their visit would contribute to the continued progress and prosperity of both Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
