Six Archaeological Shrines To Be Restored After Cyclone Ditwah Damage

COLOMBO (News 1st);Restoration work on six shrines of archaeological value, which were destroyed by Cyclone Ditwah , will commence this month.

Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs , W.P. Senadheera, said that Rs. 550 million has been allocated for this purpose. He further noted that the restoration projects will be carried out by the Central Cultural Fund.

In addition, Rs. 40 million has already been released for the restoration of 58 other shrines damaged by the cyclone. 

The Secretary added that another Rs. 200 million will be released soon for the restoration of an additional 201 shrines.

Meanwhile, reconstruction of the Elahera Anicut , which was also damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, is set to begin on the 10th of May.

Acting Director General of Archaeology, Senarath Wickramasinghe, mentioned that these repairs will be conducted by Irrigation Department engineers under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology.
