COLOMBO (News 1st); An internal inquiry has been launched into the death of an inmate at Colombo Magazine Prison, authorities confirmed.
The investigation is being conducted under the leadership of an Assistant Prisons Superintendent, following the incident that resulted in the death of a remand prisoner.
In connection with the case, a prison jailer and four prison guards have been remanded.
Of them, two prison guards were remanded until May 7 after being produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Separately, a prison jailer and two prison guards who were arrested earlier in relation to the same incident have been remanded until May 6.
Police said the investigation is being carried out under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Colombo range, acting on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police.
The inquiries are being conducted jointly by the Borella Police, the Colombo District Crimes Division and the Colombo South Crimes Investigation Division.
The incident occurred following an altercation involving two inmates and a prison guard within Magazine Prison, during which all three sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital.
One of the inmates later succumbed to injuries.
The deceased was identified as a 37‑year‑old resident of the Nawagampura area.
Police said the individual had been held in remand custody over possession of narcotics at the time of the incident.
