COLOMBO (News 1st); Police say that a 72-hour detention order has been obtained for two close associates of former Eastern Provincial Council member Iniya Bharathi, following their production before the Eravur Court.
The suspects were arrested yesterday (26) evening based on findings that emerged from investigations into the abduction, enforced disappearance and aiding and abetting of the abduction of state officials and civilians by an armed group operating in the Ampara District of the Eastern Province during the years 2007 and 2008.
Police further confirmed that Iniya Bharathi himself has also been arrested and is currently being detained for questioning in connection with the same investigation.
The two close associates of the former provincial councillor were arrested in the Akkaraipattu area.
Police say investigations have so far revealed their alleged involvement in organised criminal activities, terrorist acts and other unlawful operations.
Authorities have also uncovered information relating to a camp reportedly operated by the suspects, police said.
The arrests were carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department after a prolonged investigation initiated based on complaints received in relation to the incidents.
