COLOMBO (News 1st): The operations of the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate all coal‑related transactions in Sri Lanka has commenced.

The commission’s office has been established within the Colombo Hulftsdorp Court Complex.

The full‑powered Special Presidential Commission was appointed recently by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to investigate all coal transactions carried out in the country.

The commission is chaired by Supreme Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga.

The other members of the commission are Court of Appeal Judge Adithya Patabendige and High Court Judge Sanjeewa Somarathne.

Former Ministry Secretary P. V. Bandulasena has been appointed as the Secretary to the Commission.

The primary mandate of the commission is to examine whether any irregularities or illegal actions occurred in relation to the importation of coal and the generation of electricity by the government‑owned coal company or its successors, from the commencement of coal‑based power generation in Sri Lanka up to April 16, 2026.

The investigation will cover all coal imports and related activities during the specified period, focusing on compliance with legal and procedural requirements.
