COLOMBO (News 1st) - The low-floor priority bus service designed for persons with disabilities will be launched today at the Multimodal Transport Center in Makumbura.
The initiative comes under the "Clean Sri Lanka" program, supported by an investment of Rs. 430.7 million.
In the first phase, ten modern, air-conditioned low-floor buses will be deployed.
These are specifically designed for easy access for wheelchair users.
Each bus can accommodate 80 passengers, featuring 33 seats and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs.
The vehicles are equipped with specialized technical features to ensure the safety and stability of wheelchair users during travel.
The service will operate every 40 minutes during morning and evening peak hours on :Makumbura to Pettah and Makumbura to Kadawatha routes.
The routes have been strategically planned to provide easy access to major healthcare hubs, specifically covering the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama and the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo.
