COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is seeing a rise in drowning incidents this year compared to previous years, the Police said today.
Police Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler reported that 24 people have already died due to drowning within just the first one and a half months of 2026.
According to police statistics, 595 deaths were recorded due to drowning in 2024, while 376 deaths were reported in 2025.
ASP Wootler issued a strong appeal to the public, urging greater responsibility and vigilance when visiting water bodies.
He questioned whether individuals pay attention to warning signboards and avoid red‑flagged danger zones before entering the water. He also stressed the importance of seeking assistance from life‑saving personnel whenever possible.
He warned that alcohol and drug use before swimming remains a common and deadly pattern, especially among youth. Parents and guardians were urged to be alert and prevent high‑risk behaviour near water.
ASP Wootler noted that police have observed groups engaging in reckless water activities, including dangerous jumping into rivers and lakes, resulting in tragic and preventable deaths.
He reminded the public to avoid swimming in places that are unfamiliar, unsafe, or considered hazardous.
ASP Wootler also announced that under the guidance of the Inspector General of Police, the Sri Lanka Police Maritime Division has launched a planned nationwide life‑saving initiative for 2026, now active across the country.
