COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police say a special security and traffic plan will be in effect in and around Colombo tonight.
According to the police, around 1,200 police officers will be deployed for traffic control and security duties.
A large number of people and vehicles are expected to enter Colombo today to celebrate the dawn of the New Year.
Accordingly, the plan has been implemented to minimise traffic congestion and ensure public safety.
Police added that a significant crowd is expected at Galle Face Green for New Year celebrations.
The special traffic plan will be enforced within the police divisions of Colombo Fort, Pettah, Kompannaveediya, Maradana, Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya, and Cinnamon Gardens.
Deputy Inspector General of Police W.P.J. Senadheera, in charge of the Traffic Management and Road Safety Division, said that islandwide operations have been intensified to arrest motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
