COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology has issued a nationwide red alert, warning of prevailing heavy showers and strong winds across the entire island in the coming days.

The advisory underscores the seriousness of the situation, as the map shows Sri Lanka completely marked in red, signaling extreme caution.

According to the bulletin, intermittent showers and thunderstorms will occur over most parts of the country, with very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm expected in areas of North-Central, North-Western provinces, and Trincomalee district, while rainfall above 150 mm is likely in North, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Western provinces, and Galle, Matara, Batticaloa districts.

Strong winds of 60–70 km/h may also lash several regions.

“The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by heavy showers and strong winds,” the advisory states.
