COLOMBO (News 1st); A police sergeant was arrested in connection with the theft of electrical cables and light bulbs valued at approximately Rs. 30 million from the auditorium of the Colombo Deputy Inspector General’s (DIG) Office, according to police sources.

The auditorium had reportedly been closed for renovations in recent months, during which time the theft is believed to have occurred.

Investigations reveal that the suspect, a 58-year-old officer attached to the Pettah Police Station and residing in Badulla, had allegedly removed the items over multiple occasions during the past six months.

The theft came to light when another police officer noticed irregularities and reported the matter to the Sub-Inspector in charge of a security post at the DIG’s Office.

However, authorities have also confirmed that the Sub-Inspector failed to take appropriate legal action, leading to his suspension from service.

He was previously attached to the Bambalapitiya Police Station.
