COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reaffirmed his commitment to establishing a just and equitable society, where every citizen is equal before the law.
He made these remarks while addressing the Sri Lankan community during his official visit to the Maldives on Wednesday (30).
“We are rebuilding our country—quietly but firmly,” the President said. “For too long, the law was bent, and a belief took root that some individuals were above it. We are now restoring the supremacy of the law, regardless of status or power.”
He emphasized that his administration harbors no personal vendettas, but holds a deep conviction that every citizen must be subject to the law. “Sri Lanka needs a new political culture—one where justice is not selective, and fear of the law deters corruption and bribery.”
President Dissanayake criticized past regimes for turning corruption into a tool for power, enabling the accumulation of vast wealth and the misuse of public assets. “We are ending that era,” he declared. “I am building a country where no one dares to even think of accepting a bribe.”
He described this transformation as the core mandate given to him by the people. “We are working to re-establish the rule of law and eliminate the deep-rooted corruption that has plagued our politics.”
He also gave a strong assurance: “As President, I promise you—our Cabinet, our Parliament, and our government will not steal a single rupee of public money. For the first time, Sri Lanka will have a government that respects the people’s trust.”
