COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Minister of Public Security, Ananda Wijepala, has directed the Acting Inspector General of Police to launch a special investigation into a letter reportedly written by Nilanta Champika, the Opposition Leader of the Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha, who is believed to have taken his own life after allegedly murdering his wife and daughter.
The letter, discovered following the tragic incident, reportedly names a senior police officer in the Kandy region and refers to death threats allegedly made by a businessman.
Minister Wijepala stated that these revelations prompted the call for a thorough inquiry.
According to police reports, the bodies of Champika’s 44-year-old wife and 17-year-old elder daughter were found inside their residence yesterday (29) morning.
The wife’s body was discovered in one part of the house, while the daughter was found in an upstairs bedroom. Champika’s own body was found hanging near the house, with a nylon rope believed to have been used.
The letter also reportedly mentions a financial dispute that may have contributed to the tragic events.
Champika’s 12-year-old younger daughter was unharmed and is currently under protection.
Authorities have yet to confirm the contents of the letter publicly, but the investigation is expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding the deaths, the alleged threats, and any external pressures that may have influenced Champika’s actions.
