COLOMBO (News 1st); Employees from 28 trade unions in the electricity sector launched a coordinated trade union action today (22) by reporting sick leave, in protest against the proposed Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024.

The unions claim the bill, which is scheduled for parliamentary debate on Thursday, July 24, poses a serious threat to job security and employee benefits.

They argue that the government's move to reintroduce the amended legislation under the guise of reforming the power sector could lead to adverse consequences for workers.

Despite the protest, operations at the Ceylon Electricity Board’s (CEB) main office continued without disruption this morning, as many employees reported to work and carried out their duties as usual.

Union representatives stated that they had made multiple attempts to engage with the subject minister to discuss their concerns, but those efforts had not yielded any meaningful outcomes.
