COLOMBO (News 1st); An extraordinary gazette notification has officially announced the dates for the inaugural sessions of several local government bodies where no single party holds a clear majority—including the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

According to the gazette, the first meeting of the newly elected CMC is scheduled for June 16, 2025, at 9:30 AM. With no party securing an outright majority, the question of who will control the council remains a matter of intense political speculation.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has expressed confidence in forming a majority coalition with the support of other opposition groups, including the United National Party (UNP).

Meanwhile, the UNP has indicated its willingness to support any group capable of forming a stable administration, emphasizing the need to avoid a governance deadlock.

However, civil society groups have raised concerns about transparency in the selection of the new mayor.

In contrast, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), which also contested the local government elections, claims the opposition will not be able to form a functioning administration.

As the date for the first council meeting approaches, all eyes remain on the political maneuvering behind the scenes, with the future leadership of Sri Lanka’s financial capital city hanging in the balance.
