1,758kg of Narcotics Seized in 2025 So Far

COLOMBO (News 1st); In Sri Lanka, authorities are taking steps to obtain detention orders for 11 individuals who were apprehended with heroin & ice during a maritime operation in the southern seas.

The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) stated that the suspects will be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

A total of 778 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (ICE) were discovered aboard two multi-day fishing vessels.

According to Navy Spokesperson Commander Buddhika Sampath, the narcotics were seized during a special operation conducted over several days by the Sri Lanka Navy, state intelligence agencies, and the PNB, with international collaboration.

The fishing vessels, named Jayarusith and Nirosh 4, were inspected during the operation.

These vessels had reportedly departed for fishing activities on May 6 and May 14, respectively.

The seized narcotics and the 11 suspects were brought to the Dikovita Harbour early Wednesday (28) morning.

Meanwhile, the PNB reports that a total of 1,758 kilograms of narcotics have been seized so far this year during operations involving multi-day fishing vessels.

This includes 542 kilograms of heroin and 1,216 kilograms of ICE.

The total estimated street value of these narcotics exceeds Rs. 23 billion, according to the PNB.

The largest single seizure from such operations this year occurred on April 5, when 862 kilograms of narcotics were confiscated.
