Sri Lanka, Microsoft Collaborate to Bring AI To Schools

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Ministry of Education and Microsoft have collaborated to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning curriculum into classrooms starting from Grade Eight.

The President's Media Division said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Education and Microsoft, marking the commencement of a pilot project to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the school curriculum.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning curriculum is prepared by Microsoft, said US Amabassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung, who was also present at the event, on X.

The Ambasssador noted that the United States is committed to expanding its scientific and technological frontiers while safeguarding democracy and human rights.

She noted that it's inspiring to witness American companies, such as Microsoft, taking the lead in these endeavors.

The pilot project is slated to be rolled out in 20 selected schools across 20 districts, with a commitment to provide conducive classrooms and necessary technical equipment. A dedicated team from Microsoft will extend support to facilitate online educational activities, said the President's Media Division.

Prior to the signing, President Ranil Wickremesinghe engaged in discussions with Microsoft representatives at the President's Office. The representatives assured the President of their unwavering support towards incorporating AI into the educational framework, it added.
