Supreme Court to consider Fundamental Rights application by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Supreme Court has decided to take up for consideration on 31st January, the Fundamental Rights application by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith seeking the dismissal of Deshabandu Tennakoon from the post of Acting IGP and an interim order preventing his appointment as the IGP.

The relevant application has requested that Deshbandu Tennakoon, the acting Inspector General of Police, be dismissed from the position and an interim injunction order be issued preventing his appointment as the Inspector General of Police.

The application was called up today before judges Prithi Padman Suriyasena, Achala Vengappuli and Mahinda Samayawardena.

Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle, who appeared for the Attorney General, requested that two petitions filed by two other parties regarding this issue be called on the 31st along with the petition submitted by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

Upon Consideration, the bench fixed the date for calling this petition on the 31st.

President's Counsel Shamil Perera appeared for the petitioner and President's Counsel Romesh De Silva appeared for the respondent Deshbandu Tennakoon.

The constitutional council led by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and Deshbandu Thennakoon have also been named as respondents in the petition.
