Sri Lankan Ambassador to Myanmar, Janaka Bandara, is actively seeking the swift release of 15 Sri Lankan fishermen detained in Myanmar for allegedly engaging in illegal fishing.

The fishermen, apprehended on November 2nd, 2022, were reportedly operating two fishing vessels, 'Rayan putha' and 'Lawrence,' when they crossed into Myanmar's maritime territory.

Ambassador Bandara is in discussions with the Myanmar Ministry of Home Affairs, emphasizing the need for immediate release without prosecution.

Notably, this incident is not an isolated event, as Myanmar authorities detain Sri Lankan fishermen for illegal fishing annually.

Further complicating the matter, four among the detained fishermen require medical attention.

Ambassador Bandara and the Sri Lankan government are diligently working towards a swift and favorable resolution for all concerned.
