COLOMBO (News 1st); The Election Commission said it does not agree with the decision to appoint a special representative of the Chairman of the Regional Development Committee to monitor local government institutions.
The Election Commission said local government institutions could be politicized as the Chairman of the Development Committee is a representative of a political party.
The Commission added that it will be unfair to candidates from other political parties.
Various parties have lodged complaints in this regard.
The Election Commission said it will inform the Ministry of Local Government in writing over the next few days that it does not agree with the decision to appoint a representative of the Chairman of the Regional Development Committee to supervise local government institutions.
The Commission said the coordination of local government bodies can be done through municipal commissioners or the divisional secretary of the relevant local government body.
The Election Commission said therefore it is not necessary to appoint another representative for this purpose.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya recently filed a petition before the Supreme Court against the decision to appoint special representatives for local government institutions.
