COLOMBO (News 1st); The Food Control Administration Unit of the Ministry of Health noted that based on the National Food Safety Survey, it has been revealed that many imported fruit samples have been contaminated with lead.
All fruit importers have been informed to obtain a report from an accredited and independent laboratory from the exporting country on Heavy Metals (including Lead) in all imported food products.
This will be a mandatory requirement for the releasing of the fruit consignments to the country from the 1st of June 2023.
Importers are advised NOT to import any fruit with heavy metals above the Codex levels, as they will be rejected at the port of entry.
