Colombo (News 1st) - Pakistan's government deployed the military across two of the country's four provinces and a third province called for soldiers to keep the peace, as protesters battled soldiers and police following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, foreign media reported.
More than 1,000 protesters were arrested within 24 hours of Khan's detention. Streets in most cities and towns were deserted and schools were closed. Police vehicles were torched in several cities.
Soldiers were deployed in the provinces of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, with authorities in Balochistan also calling for soldiers.
At least one protester was killed as mobs stoned riot police who responded with tear gas and water cannons.
Khan is accused of multiple instances of corruption during his tenure as PM.
He is currently riding a wave of anti-government sentiment and looked set to win national and provincial elections this year until his arrest. He cannot stand for election if he is convicted.
