Colombo (News 1st) – Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo surrendered to authorities in the United States on Friday and will be extradited back to Peru to face corruption charges, U.S. media reported.
Toledo, 77, is charged with accepting bribes of $20 million from a Brazilian construction company during his tenure from 2001-06. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
He fled to the U.S. several years ago. But in 2018 Peru formally requested his extradition and a U.S. court placed him under house arrest.
Since then he has had to wear an ankle monitor and lived in a house in California.
His lawyers argued that his life would be at risk if he were sent back to Peru. But a judge in Northern California deemed otherwise and ordered his extradition.
