COLOMBO (News 1st); New Zealand have won the first test against Sri Lanka at Christchurch by 2 wickets, thanks to an unbeaten second innings century by Kane Williamson.

The Blackcaps resumed day five on 28 for 1, needing 257 more runs to win the game. 

With William on strike the Blackcaps were seen as the favorites to win the game, however, the Sri Lankan bowlers did not make it easy for the hosts.

New Sealand lost seven wickets in their chase on day five.

Earlier, Sri Lanka batting first posted 355 runs in their first innings to which the hosts replied with 302 runs.

Thereafter, Sri Lanka posted 373 runs for their second innings giving New Zealand 285 runs to chase.
