Colombo (News 1st) - A Spanish court has jailed a former Mexican beauty queen and her partner for four years for stealing 45 bottles of vintage wine worth $1.7 million, Spanish media reported.
The couple, who were using fake Swiss passports, were arrested on the border of Croatia and Montenegro following a nine-month international manhunt.
The wine, which had been stolen from the luxury Atrio Hotel that the couple had stayed in in the Spanish city of Caceres, has not been found. The couple have been ordered to pay $800,000 to an insurance company that had covered the claim from the hotel.
The couple were named in court as Tatiana and Estanislao. Spanish media have identified them as Miss Earth 2016 for Mexico State Priscila Guevara and Constantin Dumitru.
The couple had enjoyed a 14-course meal at the hotel’s Michelin-star restaurant and been given a tour of the wine cellar, before sneaking down in the dead of night and making off with the bottles.
One bottle was a 19th-century vintage that was worth $400,000.
