Colombo (News 1st) - Vietnam's President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has resigned amid a major crackdown on corruption by his own ruling Communist Party, which has blamed him for corruption among public officials. He is the highest ranking among a slew of high-ranking officials to be targeted by the anti-corruption drive, foreign media reported.

Vietnam's two Deputy Prime Ministers were dismissed weeks ago on allegations of corruption. In 2022 539 members of the ruling party were prosecuted for corruption.

Phuc was instrumental in driving market-friendly reforms that have seen Vietnam achieve high levels of economic growth and increased foreign direct investment. He served as Prime Minister from 2016-2021 and President since then.

Vietnam is ruled by a 4-member team comprising the President, Party Secretary, Prime Minister, and Speaker of Parliament.
