COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineer's Union warned that if coal is not procured in a orderly manner, the country would experience a very lengthy power outage by April 2023.

Nihal Weeraratne, the Chairman of the CEBEU told reporters on Monday (28) that Sri Lanka requires 38 coal shipments from 15th September 2022 to April 2023.

"However, only four shipments have arrived so far, and the fifth was delayed. If these 38 shipments do no reach the country by 15th April 2023, power outages will have to be extended," he said adding that the delay in procuring coal would bring about a dark July for Sri Lanka.
