) - Global leaders meeting at the G20 Summit in Bali rushed to calm fears of war after NATO member Poland was hit by mysterious missiles on Tuesday.

The NATO charter clearly states that an attack on one member state would be considered an assault on all of its members. NATO currently comprises 30 nations, including the United States, UK, France and Germany. Two people were killed in the attack on the village of Przewodow near Poland’s border with Ukraine.

Russia’s defense Ministry has denied that the missiles were fired by Russian forces, although the attack took place during an ongoing barrage of missiles on cities across Ukraine.

Leaders of the US, UK, European Union, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Japan and the Netherlands held an emergency roundtable in Bali to discuss the Polish situation and US President Joe Biden spoke with NATO military leaders on the phone.

President Biden played down the attack, saying it was “unlikely” that the missiles were fired from Russia, raising the possibility that the attack was carried out by an unknown party such as a terrorist group or a breakaway military faction of a nation.

Polish President Andrzej Duda announced that he had increased the “combat readiness” of selected Polish military units and urged the Polish people to stay calm.

He also said there is no conclusive evidence yet of who fired the missiles. However, earlier Poland’s foreign ministry said “Russian made missiles” had hit Poland and summoned the Russian ambassador to Poland to explain the attack.

Ukraine has also denied Russian government inferences that the missiles were launched by Ukraine to draw NATO into the Russo-Ukraine War.
