Sri Lanka stresses need to adhere to UN charter in combating terrorism

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, Mohan Pieris emphasized that Sri Lanka stresses the importance of adhereing strictly to the United Nations Charter and international laws while being sensitive in adhereing to human rights, in efforts to combat terrorism. 

Speaking at the Sixth Committee, 2nd Meeting of the General Assembly 77th Session at the United Nations session this year, the permanent representative said that Sri Lanka condemns all forms of terrorism regardless of its motivation, committed by anyone.

He further stated that coordinated measures to address root causes of terrorism should be taken, while humanitarian laws should be adhered to in combatting terrorism.

Representative Peiris pointed out that Sri Lanka was successful in rehabilitation of persons and in demining efforts, in addition to counterterrorism, and stressed that the Prevention of Terrorism Act acts as the base for counterterrorism efforts in Sri Lanka.

Moreover, he said that Sri Lanka has implemented a number of mechanisms to prevent terrorism financing, including financial intelligence unit and money laundering act, and further emphasized on terrorism becoming a key component of all activities carried out by terrorist groups
