COLOMBO (News 1st); Almost every single person uses social media daily and engages in online transactions in the modern world.

Given that everything is online, the risk of crime taking place online is also high.

Cybercrime is the latest challenge faced by Sri Lanka Police, given the advancement of technology over the years, challenging conventional crime-solving tools.

To battle online crime Sri Lanka Police established the Computer Crime Investigation Division directly under the supervision of the Criminal Investigations Department.

ASP W. P. Jayanettisiri, from the Computer Crime Investigation Division of Sri Lanka Police, said that when considering the complaints filed in Sri Lanka it is evident that many social media users are amateurs.

"They fall into trouble due to the lack of understanding of ethics and safety. Photographs are abused, and fake accounts are created to cause discomfort. Online trading is a popular tool today, and that leads to online financial fraud as well," he warned.

In order to solve cyber crimes, the Computer Crime Investigation Division maintains direct links with all accepted Social Media Platforms, and networks for their crime-solving processes.

The Computer Crime Investigation Division of Sri Lanka Police is also challenged with dealing with online Crypto-Crime.

"Cryptocurrency is the latest popular online trading tool. The people must understand to refrain from engaging in trading that is not accepted by the Central Bank. It is important to protect your privacy," said the ASP.
