State objects to FR by Rev. Fr. Jeewantha

COLOMBO (News 1st); Rev. Fr. Jeewantha Peiris, who is part of the Aragalaya Protests filed a Fundamental Rights Application with the Supreme Court recently, seeking an order to prevent Sri Lanka Police or the Three-Armed Force from making an attempt to arrest him.

The application was taken up in the presence of Justices L. T. B. Dehideniya, S. Thurairajah, and Yasantha Kodagoda.

State Counsel Shaminda Wickrama appearing for the Attorney General opposed the consideration of the applicating citing that Rev. Fr. Jeewantha Peiris had committed multiple offenses punishable under the Penal Code including committing contempt of court by violating a court order.

When the Fundamental Rights application was being taken up for consideration at the Supreme Court, members of the clergy were engaged in a silent protest near the court premises.
