COLOMBO (News 1st); The revised train fares became effective from yesterday (22) midnight.
Accordingly, the minimum train fare was increased from Rs.10 to 20, and was due to become effective from yesterday night.
The General Manager of Railways, Dhammika Jayasundara mentioned that the train ticket fees have been increased to become half of the existing bus fare.
Meanwhile, the President of the Railway Station Master’s Association, Sumedha Somaratne, stated that they have taken steps to sell train tickets at the same price, in protest against the increase in train fares without a proper system.
Speaking to News 1st, the Railway Station Master’s Association President said that the revised fares have discrepancies, and the association is of the stand that there needs to be a proper method to implement the fare hikes.
The association will take a decision with regard to the revised fares by 31st of July, he added.
