COLOMBO (News 1st); The Eisenhower Fellowship Sri Lanka unequivocally deplores the attack on peaceful protestors , lawyers & journalists at the dead of the night by heavily armed military personnel, at the Galle Face Protest site in Colombo.

Thousands of Sri Lankans have peacefully protested for months with the demand for a system change in our country and in the hopes of a better tomorrow. The perseverance, energy and creativity of the protests from across Sri Lanka captured the attention of the world and witnessed several resignations from the government, giving the hope that genuine transformation is possible through citizen mobilization.

This latest incident is extremely worrying for the brute force used by the authorities and complete disregard for fundamental rights guaranteed in our Constitution, it added.

At this critical juncture when Sri Lanka is confronted with multiple challenges, the authorities must remember its primary duty to protect and uphold the rights of its citizens. Acting in an undemocratic manner will only put Sri Lanka further at risk in the eyes of the international community at a time our nation needs to rebuild its economy and global image.

The EF Sri Lanka Group urges President Ranil Wickramasinghe and the government to desist from all forms of violence targeting its citizens and to uphold democratic processes and the rule of the law.

It is also paramount to focus on critical priorities such as getting the economy back on track, and re-establishing public trust in government.
