WEATHER: Disaster Relief Officer dead after he was swept away by strong currents

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Disaster Relief Officer for the Kiriella Divisional Secretariat died on Tuesday (31) after he was carried away by strong currents.

The unfortunate incident had taken place when he was returning home during a downpour after attending an official matter, said the Ratnapura District Secretary.

Many areas in the Ratnapura District were affected by heavy rains on Tuesday (31) and most places were inundated by floodwaters.

Weather Forecast:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm may occur at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. Several spells of showers may occur in the Anuradhapura district.

Strong winds of about 40 kmph can be expected at times on western slope of the central hills, Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Raising Water Levels:

The Disaster Manager Center warned that water levels at several major waterways are rising.
