COLOMBO (News 1st); The prevailing showery condition over South-western part (Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts) of the island is expected to continue further, the Meteorology Department says.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, while very heavy showers above 150 mm can occur at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Heavy showers above 100 mm can occur at some places in Western province and in Galle and Matara districts too.

Several spells of showers will occur in Northern Province and in Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Uva and Eastern provinces during the evening or night.

Strong winds ((40-50) kmph) can be expected at times over the western slope of the central hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces and in Hambantota district.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, many low lying areas in the Ratnapura area have been inundated due to the prevailing rains. The Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Unit of the Irrigation Department, Engineer SPC Sugiswara stated that the people living in the low lying areas of the Bulathsinhala area should be vigilant due to the rising water level of the Kuda river due to the prevailing rains.

Accordingly, early warnings have been issued for the Bulathsinhala and Ingiriya Divisional Secretariats in the Kalutara District and the Gaga Ihala Korale and Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariats in the Kandy District.

Early landslide warnings were issued for Bulathkohupitiya, Aranayake, Yatiyantota, Deraniyagala, Dehiowita and Ruwanwella Divisional Secretariats in the Kegalle District and Kotapola and Pitabeddara Divisional Secretariats in the Matara District, and for the Ambagamuwa, Kotmale and Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariats in the Nuwara Eliya District.

Meanwhile, warnings have been issued to Ratnapura, Eheliyagoda, Ayagama and Elapatha Divisional Secretariats in the Ratnapura District under the two categories and NIDithigala, Kalawana, Imbulpe, Godakawela, Kolonna, Kuruwila Balangoda and Kiriella Divisional Secretariat.
