WEATHER ALERT : Heavy rains for coastal areas

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology announced that wind speeds can increase up to (70- 80) kmph in sea areas.

There can be very heavy showers or thundershowers, strong winds (70-80) kmph gusting up to 90 kmph associated with high seas over the aforementioned sea areas.

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the sea area bounded by (10N-20N and 82E-93E) and the sea areas bounded by (00-04N, 75E-90E) until further notice.

Those who are out in the aforementioned sea regions are advised to return to the coasts or moved to safer areas immediately.

Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Winds will be westerly or south-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph.

Wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Potuvil via Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Matara, and Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Potuvil via Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Matara, and Hambantota will be rough at times.

There is a possibility that nearshore sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambanthota may experience swell waves, having (2.0 - 2.5) m height (This is not for the land area).

Naval and fishing communities in this area requested to be vigilant in this regard.
