COLOMBO (News 1st); President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared emergency law with effect from midnight on Friday (6).

The President’s Media Division in a statement, said that the President has declared the State of Emergency in the interest of public security, the preservation of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.

The Department of Government Information said that the continued protests have not only disrupted public life, but also has disrupted essential services including that of public transport, industries, hospital services and others, and that they only serve to worsen the existing economic crisis.

The Department of Government Information points out that the need of the hour is to maintain political stability and a peaceful society amidst negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and other stakeholders, which have already begun.

Citing the proposals introduced by the BASL on 23rd April, the Department of Government Information states that a stable Government is the biggest necessity in the moment.
