'Sathi Pasala' to be established at Welikada prison to rehabilitate inmates

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Prisons has initiated a five-year plan to rehabilitate drug-addicted prison inmates according to the Commissioner General of Prisons' five year plan. 

Accordingly, the Department of Prisons aims to rehabilitate drug addicts and to release them to the society as good citizens. 

Therefore, a 'sathi pasala' program has been initiated as a unique rehabilitation program for this purpose. Prisons Commissioner Thushara Upuldeniya has instructed the Prisons Superintendents to conduct the 'Sathi Pasala' program at every prison under the guidance of Ven. Athurugiriya Dhamma Vihari Thero.

This program was already in operation at the Ambepussa, Welikada, Thaldena, Moneragala, Dumbara, Pallekele, Mahara, Kegalle and Kuruwita prisons, which are being run as Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Centers and its next stage is the introduction of the 'Sathi Pasala' to the women's section of the Welikada Prison on 27th April.
