COLOMBO (News 1st); The decision to fire a weapon was taken outside the direction of the IGP, the Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, Nimal Karunasiri states.
IGP C.D. Wickramaratne and a group of senior police officers were summoned before the Human Rights Commission this morning (22) to make statements regarding the Rambukkana murder case.
The Human Rights Commissioner pointed out that the IGP has been instructing people not to use firearms in any protest for months. However, the gun was used in the Kegalle incident.
And therefore, the Police had decided to take disciplinary action in this regard, while the HRCSL too was informed in that regard, the Commissioner said.
The IGP had commended the Human Rights Commission for its efforts to make formal decisions regarding decisions taken outside his direction.
“Police have decided NOT to use firearms in any form when controlling the prevailing situation in the country. This is a major victory. The Inspector General also agreed that security forces will not act in a violent manner with regard to any protest in the future.” Commissioner Karunasiri stated.
He added that the IGP had agreed to provide all the details regarding the recent incident to the HRCSL and to implement the recommendations of the Human Rights Commission accordingly.
