Landslide warnings in effect; Rains to continue

COLOMBO (News 1st); Landslide warnings issued for 8 districts continues remain in place due to heavy rains.

The Senior Geologist at the National Building Research Organization, Dr. Wasantha Senadheera, said that people in Badulla, Colombo, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts should be vigilant due to heavy rain.

The Department of Meteorology said that the rains will continue till the 13th even though there is a decrease in the rainfall after Tuesday (12).

The department urges the public to be more careful in minimizing the dangers of strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation further urges the public to be more careful when using reservoirs as the water levels in several reservoirs have also risen.

Several sluice gates were opened due to the rising water levels in the Rajanganaya, Angamuwa, Deduru Oya, and Batticaloa Unnachchiya reservoirs due to heavy rains that occurred on Sunday (10).

The Department of Irrigation said that the water levels of Deduru Oya and Kala Oya could also rise.
