COLOMBO (News 1st); State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development, Namal Rajapaksa has said that he NEVER condones the blocking of Social Media.
"I will never condone the blocking of social media. The availability of VPN, just like I’m using now, makes such bans completely useless. I urge the authorities to think more progressively and reconsider this decision," he tweeted.
Sri Lanka suspended access to social media platforms in the country as per the request of the Ministry of Defence.
Secretary to the Ministry of Technology, Jayantha de Silva said all telephone service providers have been informed of this order.
Speaking to News 1st, Minister Namal Rajapaksa said that he does NOT agree with the social media ban.
Namal Rajapaksa said that this situation NOT happens ONLY in Sri Lanka, and that it's common in other countries as well.
Moreover, the need to regulate social media is further emphasized by this situation, instead of imposing a ban on social media and lifting it from time to time, Minister Namal Rajapaksa said.
In addition, he said that a code of Ethics concerning the use of Social Media should be designed and presented.
