Case against Weerawansa & others for unlawful protest fixed for 30th May

COLOMBO (News 1st); The case filed against MP Wimal Weerawansa and five others for protesting by obstructing the road when the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights visited Sri Lanka in 2016, will be taken up for examination on the 30th of May 2022.

The order was made by Colombo Additional Magistrate Chandima Liyanage.

MPs Wimal Weerawansa, Jayantha Samaraweera, Mohamed Muzammil and Weerakumara Dissanayake, Piyasiri Wijenayake, Roger Seneviratne who were named as suspects in the case were present in court on Monday (7).

When the matter was called up in court, the Cinnamon Gardens Police requested court to provide an alternative day for the examination of the case.

The case was filed by the Cinnamon Gardens Police for causing disturbance to the people and the normal flow of traffic against the arrival of the then-UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, to the island in February 2016.
