COLOMBO (News 1st); The University Grants Commission (UGC) says that a serious problem has arisen for the continuation of academic activities at universities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Prof. Sampath Amaratunga stated that the Vice Chancellors have taken steps to maintain 50% capacity in all universities.
However, he added that the university authorities had informed him that number of COVID-19 cases amongst hostel students is rapidly increasing.
He noted that the reason for this situation is the non-compliance of the approved health guidelines by the students in the hostels and on the university premises.
Prof. Amaratunga added that due to the current situation some university faculties have to be closed again, and urged the students to move towards full vaccination and contribute to the control of COVID-19 situation in universities.
