COLOMBO (News 1st); The Meteorology Department warns that the disturbance located in the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman sea area has intensified in to a low pressure area.
There can be very heavy showers or thundershowers, strong winds (40-50) kmph gusting up to 60 kmph associated with rough seas over the aforementioned sea area., it added.
Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal (03S-10N, 85E-93E), until further notice.
Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive regarding future forecasts issued in this regard.
The Met Department also said that the showery condition in the Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva provinces is expected to enhance from 02nd night to 04th March.
Heavy rainfall above 100 mm can be expected at some places in these areas during this period.
On Tuesday (1), several spells of showers will occur in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Matale district.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Kaluthara and Nuwara-Eliya districts during the evening or night. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm can be expected at some places.
Wind speed can increase up to 40 kmph at times in Uva and North –western provinces and in Batticaloa, Ampara, Hambantota and Matale districts.
General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
