COLOMBO (News 1st); The deadline for applications for the registration of New Political Parties expires on Thursday (24).
The Chairman of the Election Commission, Attorney-at-Law, Nimal Punchihewa stated that the application period ends after 12 noon on Thursday (24).
The Chairman of the Elections Commission stated that all the applications submitted will be examined by a special committee appointed by the Elections Commission.
It is planned to direct the eligible political parties to a special interview.
The acceptance of applications for the registration of New Political Parties commenced on January 24, 2022.
At present, there are 79 registered Political Parties in the Country.
The Chairman of the Election Commission stated that out of these 6 registered Political Parties with legal issues are considered inactive Political Parties.
Out of the applications submitted for the registration of Political Parties last year (2021), only 3 Political Parties were allowed to register.
These are the Tamil Makkal Kuttani, the New Lanka Freedom Party, and the Tamil Progressive Alliance.
