COLOMBO (News 1st); The Government is demonstrating its inability to uphold democracy, says Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake.

Commenting on the recent sentiments brought forth by the Minister of Justice, President’s Counsel Ali Sabry regarding imposing restrictions to trade union’s right to protest, the SJB MP said that no one has the right to ban trade unions or impose restrictions on trade unions protesting.

The Government cannot simply bring in a law to do that as the right to protest of trade unions is the accepted standard around the world, he stated.

“The government has no right to suppress the people like this. A country must be governed in a democratic manner with good policies that ensures the wellbeing of its people. This Government is demonstrating their inability to do exactly that,” he added.
