CCD deploys two teams to arrest Borella hand grenade suspect

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo Crimes Division has deployed two teams to arrest the individual, who is said to have visited the All Saints Church located down Ananda Rajakaruna Mawatha in Borella, on the morning of Tuesday, the 11th of January, when a live hand grenade was discovered at the Church premises.

According to Police, the investigations are being conducted based on a statement made by Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Head of Sri Lanka’s Catholic Church regarding an individual visiting the Church premises.

A high ranking Police officer speaking to News 1st stated that the CCTV footage was also checked to determine the arrival of such an individual to the Church premises.

A live hand grenade was discovered at the All Saints Church located in Ananda Rajakaruna Mawatha in Borella, last Tuesday (11) evening.

The Police Special Task Force was called to dispose the grenade.

As of now, Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the incident.

One suspect arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division over the incident, was remanded until the 25th of this month, after being produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajidra Jayasuriya on Thursday (13).

The Colombo Crimes Division informed the court that the suspect who is a resident of Dematagoda had been in contact with the chief suspect behind the incident, to place the hand grenade at the Church premises.

The CCD also informed the court that three other suspects arrested in connection with the incident are being interrogated under detention orders.
