Sri Lanka officially names twin elephant calves

COLOMBO (News 1st); On August 31st 2021, Sri Lanka and a proud elephant mother Surangi welcomed a historic set of twin male calves at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage.

They were the first semi-domesticated twin elephant births in the country.

On Tuesday (11), the twins and another cub were named in the presence of Sharmila Rajapaksha, Director General of the National Zoological Gardens and SLPP Kegalle District Leader Kanaka Herath.

Sharmila Rajapaksha announced that the twins were named Disa and Sajjana, while another cub was named Neelamani.

Meanwhile, MP Kanaka Herath praised the efforts of all those involved in making this a success. "I would like to thank everyone here for their help. The DG has plans to revive this sector", the SLPP Kegalle District Leader added.

In 2020, Sri Lanka for the first time recorded the birth of twin elephant calves in the country’s Minneriya National Park.
