44 deaths by motor accidents so far in 2022

COLOMBO (News 1st):  In the 1st three days of this year, 44 people have died due to road accidents; of the fatalities, 21 people had died due to road accidents reported on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of January this year, while the remaining deaths were due to accidents reported in the last few days of the previous year, Sri Lanka Police on Wednesday (Jan. 5) said. 53 people died due to road accidents in the last five days of 2021, Police Spokesperson Attorney-at-Law SSP Nihal Thalduwa told News 1st. He said from the 25th to 31st of December 2021, 52 fatal road accidents were reported in the country. According to SSP Thalduwa, 2461 people died due to road accidents during the course of 2021, while 2365 road accidents were reported across the island. The negligence of motorists, excessive speeds, lack of attention, and violation of road rules are the leading causes for road accidents, SSP Thalduwa pointed out.
