COLOMBO (News 1st): Of the COVID-19 cases detected in Sri Lanka, 12 percent are suspected to be infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the Ministry of Health said on Friday (Dec. 31).
“Based on the data collected by the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, 12 percent of the COVID-19 cases could be of the Omicron variant; the situation is currently being monitored,” Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa, the Director at the Health Promotion Bureau noted.
Whilst emphasizing that since there is limited data available on the spread of the Omicron variant among the elderly with other complications, Dr. Batuwanthudawa noted that there is a significant risk of severe complications or death.
Therefore, he urged the people to remain vigilant.
