COLOMBO (News 1st); The Madras High Court on Wednesday (30) directed the Indian Government to file a report on the steps taken to ensure the release of 68 Tamil Nadu fishermen who are under the custody of Sri Lanka for violating the international maritime boundary.

The India Today reported that Justices C. V. Karthikeyan and S. Srimathy requested the Tamil Nadu Government to file a status report on 31st December.

The Tamil Nadu Government had also told the Court that letters had been sent to the Indian Government to take steps for the release of the fishermen. The Court was also informed that the Indian authorities also had taken steps to secure their release.

The Coordinator of the fisherman's rights association Tamil Nadu Meenavar Padhukappu Urimai Iyakkam, G. Thirumurugan alleged that the Lankan authorities violated human rights by spraying sanitizers on the fishermen upon their arrest.
